Recently, we saw Blizzard shut down the eSports side of the popular MOBA title Heroes of the Storm, and there is now the fear the Hearthstone could potentially going the same way. Following the development cutbacks for HOTS, as well as its competitive gaming scene being done away with, Blizzard sent out a survey to Hearthstone players to gauge their attachment to the eSports side of the digital card game.
On the surface, the survey appeared to be based upon the game’s latest expansion, entitled Rastakhan’s Rumble, though there are a couple of questions that did catch the eye of those taking it. The questions based around the eSports platform read “how important are Blizzard sponsored Hearthstone tournaments to you?” and “if there were no Blizzard sponsored Hearthstone tournaments, how likely are you to play Hearthstone in the next 30 days?”
Given recent events surrounding HOTS, this could be a worrying sign that Hearthstone may be going the same way. If it was to do so, not only would the eSports aspect be completely shut down, but if what has happened to Heroes of the Storm was to repeat itself here, it would also mean that the title would receive less frequent updates.
