It seems Gearbox can’t hold their tongue as they have released more teases for upcoming announcements at PAX on March 28th. This time they sent a tweet with an image of both Duke Nukem and Ishi Sato from BulletStorm. The image is taken from the BulletStorm Full Clip Edition which featured Duke as a playable guest in the campaign. This leads to more questions than answers, but this of course is the point of these teasers.
BulletStorm was released back in back in February 2011 and received positive reviews thanks to its crazy over the top action, arcade influences and its loveable cast of miscreants. The game then got a re-release in 2017 for PS4 and Xbox One and again was well received thanks to visual upgrades and buttery smooth 60 frames per second. This then has to make you think that there is potentially a long awaited sequel in the works and if that’s true then there are going to be some very happy people as the game did end on a bit of a cliff hanger. It would also make sense for BulletStorm to make a return as there has been a rise in the number of old school shooters with the likes of Doom and Wolfenstein receiving critical acclaim. This shows there is a hunger from gamers for an old school style as we don’t always want games to have big epic stories, sometimes we just want to shoot some alien mutants in the face with a shotgun or kick them in the private parts and laugh about it. I also believe that now would be the perfect time to announce a new BulletStorm as there is an overabundance of Battle Royale and military shooters, it’s time someone decided to just have fun again and blast as many bad guys as possible with as many over powered weapons as you can hold.
I previously mentioned Doom and Wolfenstein in my last paragraph but these were not the only names in over the top action. You see, around the time of the early nineties when these games ruled the gaming world there was another name, a name that struck fear into alien b*****ds around the universe, Duke Nukem. Now, when some people hear this name they will roll their eyes or snicker due to Duke having made us wait for 12 years only to deliver the huge disappointment that was Duke Nukem: Forever but here me out. Duke Forever was a bad game but it was also in a line-up of otherwise great games and so I don’t think we can turn away from the entire franchise due to one bad game. I personally hope that GearBox are about to announce a Duke Nukem game they are making themselves rather than finishing an old project. There have even been rumblings for a while now of a remake of Duke Nukem 3D, the game that put the franchise on the forefront of the first person shooter genre. If this done properly with the respect it deserves it could be absolutely awesome, that being said though, I have played Duke 3D to death and would like a new outing rather than replaying the same game I have already played through several times now. Who knows, maybe they will return Duke Nukem to his 2D roots and give us another run and gun Contra style game starring everyone’s favourite alien ass kicker. The mind boggles at this point.
We won’t have to wait long to see what exactly GearBox Software is up to and what else they are going announce as upon time of writing there have been even more teases and images placed onto their Twitter account. Whatever they are up to it seems like GearBox have plenty to keep themselves busy with in the future and I for one am very happy about that.
