Fans of the Kingdom Hearts series had a little surprise on Sunday: the Kingdom Hearts III opening trailer, as seen below.
“Face My Fears”
Fans have been waiting thirteen years for Kingdom Hearts III, and with the opening revealed, it now feels more official. With the first release of Hikaru Utada’s collaboration with Skrillex, the opening really shows how this will be the ending of the Xehanort Saga.
“Face My Fears” plays throughout the video, showing all the main characters of the games, and the spin-offs. Showing Sora, Riku and Kairi growing from a trio in Destiny Island to becoming keyblade masters, and even Ventus, Aqua and Terra and what appears to be their slow descent into darkness through Xehanort. There’s a lot to recognise in the game opening, with the return of Axel (Lea) Roxas, and even Xion – who appears with what appears to be silver hair underneath her Organisation XIII cloak. Essentially, the trailer is something of a recap of previous games in the series, but it also provides a bit of advertising. It not only creates a brief story that will allow interpretation of the game but encourages newer players to get involved with the rest of the series should they choose to.
“Don’t Think Twice”
This has been the first time that fans have heard the opening for Kingdom Hearts III. There has always been significant meaning to the Kingdom Hearts opening songs, from “Simple and Clean” to “My Sanctuary”. So now we have both the theme song and the opening song of the franchise. “Don’t Think Twice” the theme song is featured below.
So, what do the songs tell us to expect for the finale of the Xehanort saga? Honestly, I have my bets on a fairly bittersweet ending – not fully heartbreaking, but enough to know that it will be the end of a saga. At least, the Xehanort Saga.
Kingdom Hearts III is out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on the 29th of January, 2019.
