Month in Review: January

It might be the greyest month of the year, but January has been anything but dull when it comes to the gaming industry. Here are just a few things DarkSpawn talked about in the first month of 2019.

From exciting news about eSports tournaments to some truly excellent game releases, January certainly hasn’t been blue for gamers. In fact, 2019 is set to be an overall fantastic year for gaming – so why not start as you mean to go on? Here’s what we’ve been up to, from releases to opinion pieces:

Top Game Releases for January

Resident Evil 2 Remake – PS4, Xbox One, PC

One of the most hotly-anticipated titles to come out of January, Resident Evil’s latest remake, transforming Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield from boxy pixels to HD masterpieces, is yet another success for Capcom. If you’re a fan of old-school zombie action wrapped up in an attractive package, then Resident Evil 2 Remake should definitely be your next purchase.

Kingdom Hearts III – PS4, Xbox One

After what feels like a hundred years of waiting, and countless spin-off titles, Kingdom Hearts III is finally here to cap off the decade-long series, bringing up back to basics with Sora, Goofy and Donald as they explore previously visited worlds and maybe even discover some new ones. With the usual visual quality you’d expect from Square Enix, this title plays as well as it looks.

Life is Strange 2, Episode 2 – PS4, Xbox One, PC

An unexpected success and a brand-new take on the studio’s superpowered teen series, Life is Strange, the first episode of LiS2 has the formula down pat, with likable main characters, an on-point soundtrack and stylised visuals. Episode 2 continues in the same vein, and while it can meander at times, it’s easy to find yourself immersed in the story and adventure.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season – Episode 3 – PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

The final series to be launched from the now-defunct Telltale Games, the continuation of The Walking Dead series is one that was met by delight, and some suspicion, from fans. While this latest episode does nothing new, it also doesn’t scrimp on story and design, making it a worthy addition to Clem’s final plotline.

New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe – Switch

Who doesn’t love a Mario title to cheer up those gloomy January days? New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe might not be the sparkly new game or runaway success that Smash is, but it’s certainly a worthwhile update to add to your collection, and ideal for younger fans of Nintendo’s game series.
