Obsidian’s Outer Worlds is set to be one of the gaming highlights of 2019. It is a single-player first-person RPG. Your character was on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy but, after being lost in transit, awakes decades later in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony.
Halcyon is controlled by a corporate board who operate and control everything within the colony except for the alien monsters left behind by the botched terraforming operation. Your character is a joker in the pack whose emergence changes the whole shape of the colony and ruffles more than a few feathers.
As in Fallout: New Vegas you will encounter various factions vying for power and companions who have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. What you do with them is however up to you. Help them, hinder them or manipulate them, it is all down to what you decide. Similarly, you will be able to align yourself with one faction, strike a balance between them or be on nobodies side but your own.
Flaws are a new character aspect which adds to the depth of character development and also enriches the story. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren’t particularly good at. For example, keep getting attacked by Raptidons? You can take the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting them, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately.
Clearly, Obsidian is looking to tempt fans of Fallout. The Outer Worlds will be released sometime in 2019 for PS4, Xbox One and PC, and will be published by Take-Two Interactive’s new Private Division games label.
