Serral Makes History After Winning StarCraft II World Championship Series

Finnish star Joona “Serral” Sotala put on a spectacular performance to overcome Kim “Stats” Dae Yeob in a 4-2 win at Blizzcon’s StartCraft II WCS Global Finals. Not only was it a heavily efficient showcase by the European, Serral also became the first non-Korean player to win the World Championship Series.

Serral was impressive throughout his run through the tournament, winning 2-0 against Kim “sOs” Yoo Jin and Ju “Zest” Seong Wuk. To make his mark on the playoffs, Serral went on to blitz past Park “Dark” Ryung Woo with a 3-0 win, followed up by a 3-1 victory over Lee “Rogue” Byung Ryul.

Stats too had an impressive display, beating sOs in the semi-finals, who had beaten one of the favourites in the competition in Cho “Maru” Seong Ju. The stage was then set for a head-to-head battle between Serral and Stats, which saw the European run out as a 4-2 winner.

Serral’s regional counterpart Tobias “ShoWTimE” Sieber was the closest player to reach the dizzying hights of WCS points that the eventual winner had racked up, with ShoWTimE hitting 3,270 points, though the player never made it out of the group stages. Serral however, had more than quadrupled this score, going into this weekend’s event with a towering 14,090 WCS points.
