The video game industry has been on a roll lately, with a slew of great games that have kept us busy, and by the looks of it, there’s more good stuff on the way. While 2019 might seem like a long way to go, the announcement of various games releasing has made it nonetheless enticing for gaming enthusiasts. Gaming fans are looking forward to experiencing the next installment of their favorite games and other new concepts that are going to be introduced this coming year. So, here’s what you can expect.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Those of you who are fans of Ghost of Tsushima are going to love Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The new game is all set to be released from the masters of action RPG FromSoftware, which means fans are going to be in for a treat once Sekiro hits the shelves because we’ll get to enjoy an epic new world that should keep fans occupied for a good part of the year. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is set in mythical Japan where feudal lords reign supreme and the Japanese hack-and-slash tradition is still in full swing. The release of this particular game is being highly anticipated because it promises to deliver more than just the sturm und drang that’s expected in games about guys with big swords. From what we’ve been able to gauge so far is that there’s an inclusion of a grappling hook that has the possibility of adding a whole new dimension in the gaming experience that’s possible with these sorts of open world zones and arenas.

Doom Eternal

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Yes folks. It’s happening. Doom’s release in 2016 was met with much fervor from fans of the genre of big guns and zombies. This time around though, the game’s developer id Software are looking to bring us more than just the BFG and a contemporary, play-it-safe game design of the previous installment. Expect to experience hell unleashed as the game’s main character is brought face to face with the terror in Terra Firma. While fans of the Doom franchise will have to keep their trigger fingers in check until the game’s release next year, the developers did slate an official unveiling of the Doom Eternal trailer which was shown during Quakecon.

Gears 5

Platforms: Xbox One, PC

For those of you who are wondering; yes, the new game is not going to be called Gears of War 5. Instead, the new titled will be called Gears 5. We think this less-is-more approach is much more convenient. Microsoft rolled out the first of the shooter series back in 2016, and since then has churned up installments of the franchise at regular intervals, each one better than the last. So, it goes without saying that there’s a lot riding on Gears 5, and a simple tweak of the name isn’t going to cut it. While Microsoft, the game’s developer, is keeping its cards pretty tight to the chest at the moment, we expect Gears to feature online co-op and split-screen gameplay. But, the real test for the game is going to be the visuals. Only time will tell if Gears 5 delivers on its visuals in spades. But, for now, all we know is that the game will support 4K ultra HD, HDR and will run on 60 frames per second.

Skull and Bones

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

Good news for those who were wondering if Sea of Thieves was the only option they had when it comes to games based on pirates. Skull and Bones is a brand-new game that’s all set to be released by Ubisoft next year. Basically, the game is like Assassin’s Creed, but the assassins have been replaced by pirates who sail the high seas in search for treasure. Players may find some other similarities to the new game since Skull and Bones is being developed by pretty much the same guys who were behind Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. Set in the 18th century, a time when piracy was at its prime, (deep-sea not online). The game will seem to focus more on pirate-versus-pirate, rather than skirmishing with trade vessels and the British and Spanish navies, which could be a bit of a bummer for some fans of the genre. That being said, players are also going to brush shoulders with the supernatural along with swords, cannon fire and other pirates up to no good, which promises to be exciting.

Star Wars: Fallen Order

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Hold that thought, Rey! The upcoming game, Star Wars: Fallen Order might just be the one you’ve been waiting to experience your entire life. According to Respawn Entertainment, the new game that’s scheduled for release during the holidays in 2019, will take place between Episode 3 and 4. It’s safe to say that the events in the game will take place after the end of Revenge of the Sith. For those of you who have lost track, this is where the last of the Jedi are being wiped out by the Empire. So far, very little is known as to the actual game-play of Star Wars: Fallen Order. What we do know, thanks to EA’s official Fallen Order page, is that we’ll be playing a surviving Padawan, technically a Jedi apprentice rather than one of the high-profile Jedi. The game is likely to have a multiplayer component, although the developers have hinted of their plan on delivering an interesting single-player experience.

So, there you have it, those were our top picks for the most anticipated games that are going to grace our gaming consoles and PCs in 2019. Other games that you can expect to be playing next here, is Resident Evil 2, Kingdom Hearts 3, Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. With so many great games to look forward to its safe to say that the current-gen is going to finish off with a bang!
