The Weeknd has invested Esports organisation in OverActive Media (OAM), and will be the first global ambassador to be associated with the company. The Weeknd will be a part of the parent company of Toronto Defiant and Splyce, who both compete in the renowned Overwatch League competition.
The announcement came with with the following statement from The Weeknd: “As a big esports fan, I am really excited to be involved in this project. I am looking forward to collaborating with OverActive Media in unique and innovative ways.” Meanwhile, OAM has announced that there will be collaborations for Toronto Defiant between both The Weeknd and the OWL through the course of this year.
As for OAM, the company owns teams in a range of eSports sectors, including teams who compete in the League of Legends European Championship, the Overwatch League, Rocket League, StarCraft, Smite and the Call of Duty World League. They join an elite group of just five organisations worldwide that hold a permanent slot in leagues for Overwatch and League of Legends.
Investment partnership is currently a hot topic in competitive gaming, following the recent reveal of Drake partnering with 100 Thieves, as well as aXiomatic Gaming receiving investment from Michael Jordan late last year.
